Linux Hardware Support List - Συμβατότητα Συσκευών στο Linux

Πρόκειται για μια προσπάθεια που έκανα να συγκεντρώσω διαφορα links σχετικά με τη συμβατότητα συσκευών στο Linux.Πολλοί νέοι κυρίως χρήστες αντιμετωπίζουν προβληματα σχετικά με την εγκατάσταση καποιών συσκευών, κυρίως πολυμηχανήματα, κάρτες TV και κάρτες ασύρματης δικτύωσης. Όπως είναι φυσικό τα παρακάτω links είναι στην αγγλική γλώσσα. Επίσης υπάρχει μία λίστα συμβατότητας για τις κυριότερες διανομές Linux και στο τέλος καποιες (αναπόφευκτες) εντολές για την αναγνώριση του hardware σας.
Ελπίζω το παρόν άρθρο να αποτελέσει ένα κατάλληλο οδηγό αγοράς,ώστε να μην παιδευτείτε με την εγκατάσταση και λειτουργία του νέου σας hardware.

Επίσης αν ξέρουμε το chip του router/modem/WiFi card από εδώ (thx violator),από εδώ θα βρείτε πολλές πληροφορίες υποστηρίξης.
Αν έχετε Atheros chipset στην Wireless LAN συσκευή σας τότε πρέπει να κοιτάξετε στο madwifi.
Για κάρτες χωρίς native drivers χρήσιμη είναι η αναζήτηση στον αντίστοιχο κατάλογο του ndiswrapper.

Big day for the Debian fans - Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny" has been released: "The Debian Project is pleased to announce the official release of Debian GNU/Linux version 5.0 (code-named 'Lenny') after 22 months of constant development. Debian GNU/Linux is a free operating system which supports a total of twelve processor architectures and includes the KDE, GNOME, Xfce, and LXDE desktop environments. It also features compatibility with the FHS v2.3 and software developed for version 3.2 of the LSB. This release includes numerous updated software packages, such as the K Desktop Environment 3.5.10, an updated version of the GNOME desktop environment 2.22.2, the Xfce 4.4.2 desktop environment, LXDE 0.3.2.1, the GNUstep desktop 7.3, X.Org 7.3, OpenOffice.org 2.4.1, GIMP 2.4.7, Iceweasel 3.0.6...." As usual, a wide variety of installation media is available for free download from the project's mirror sites. Anne Nicolas has announced the availability of the beta release of Mandriva Linux 2009.1: "The beta release of Mandriva Linux 2009.1 (code name 'Margaux') is now available. This beta version provides some updates on major desktop components of the distribution, including KDE 4.2.0, GNOME 2.25.90, Xfce 4.6 RC1, X.Org server 1.5, OpenOffice.org 3.0.1, Qt 4.5.0 RC1. This beta version proposes step 1 of Speedboot, which should improve the boot time. It’s not enabled by default, to test it, enter the 'speedboot' keyword at boot time. This release is available as a DVD edition (32-bit or 64-bit) with a traditional installer, two CDs GNOME or KDE with a traditional installer. You will also find live CD 'One' edition with proprietary drivers for KDE or GNOME environment." See the release announcement and release notes for more details. Mandriva Linux Assembly

Following the announcement in December 2008 of an international committee associating Mandriva with its Community, Mandriva, Europe’s leading Linux publisher, has completed the setting up of Mandriva Linux Assembly.

The roles, tasks and missions of this comity set out below with the goal of motivating future members wishing to take part in this venture.

The Mandriva Linux community draws together a wide range of participants:

• distribution users who may be actively promoting Open Source and Mandriva Linux possibly within the framework of associations,
  
• development version testers whose aim is to unveil bugs and submit suggestions for improvements,
  
• packagers and developers actively involved in development,
• translators of tools and documents whether online or not,
  
• the Mandriva team of developers, webmasters, project leaders.
  

This host of participants forms the strength of Mandriva Linux. And to sustain and to harness these talents and industry it was clear we needed to give them a clear structure to work within.

Mandriva proposes a monthly newsletter delivered through assembly-announce@mandrivalinux.org. We shall raise points being currently worked upon, the products roadmap, research programmes, global strategy, OEM and enterprise activities. This mailing list can be read by all and will be complemented by mandriva-discussion@mandrivalinux.org which will allow Mandriva Linux Assembly members to submit opinions or ask for further information on the points raised.

Έτοιμη η RC2 του πολυαναμενόμενου Debian 5. Βέβαια με το Debian θα πρέπει να έχουμε υπομονή και να μην βασιζόμαστε στο πρόγραμμα για την τελική έκδοση...
Κατεβαίνει και σύντομα θα μπει στο Virtual Box!

Otavio Salvador has announced the availability of the second release candidate of the Debian Installer for "Lenny", the upcoming release of Debian GNU/Linux 5.0. As usual, the installer comes with the complete set of Debian "Lenny" packages on CD, DVD and Blu-ray images. From the release announcement: "The Debian Installer team is pleased to announce the second release candidate of the installer for Debian GNU/Linux 'Lenny'. Improvements: updated Linux kernel (2.6.26-13) and external modules (2.6.26-5); available modules for PATA devices on CD-ROM images; improved brltty device support; support firmware loading from USB devices in SPARC; improved support for encrypted partitions in rescue mode; fixed multi-arch CD - it no longer boots directly to the amd64 installer; updated installation guide with a re-added Spanish translation...." The most common way to install Debian "Lenny" is by using the "netinst" CD images, which can be downloaded from here: debian-Lenny-DI-rc2-i386-netinst.iso (150MB, MD5), debian-Lenny-DI-rc2-amd64-netinst.iso (131MB, MD5).
