Linux Hardware Support List - Συμβατότητα Συσκευών στο Linux

Πρόκειται για μια προσπάθεια που έκανα να συγκεντρώσω διαφορα links σχετικά με τη συμβατότητα συσκευών στο Linux.Πολλοί νέοι κυρίως χρήστες αντιμετωπίζουν προβληματα σχετικά με την εγκατάσταση καποιών συσκευών, κυρίως πολυμηχανήματα, κάρτες TV και κάρτες ασύρματης δικτύωσης. Όπως είναι φυσικό τα παρακάτω links είναι στην αγγλική γλώσσα. Επίσης υπάρχει μία λίστα συμβατότητας για τις κυριότερες διανομές Linux και στο τέλος καποιες (αναπόφευκτες) εντολές για την αναγνώριση του hardware σας.
Ελπίζω το παρόν άρθρο να αποτελέσει ένα κατάλληλο οδηγό αγοράς,ώστε να μην παιδευτείτε με την εγκατάσταση και λειτουργία του νέου σας hardware.

Big day for the Debian fans - Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny" has been released: "The Debian Project is pleased to announce the official release of Debian GNU/Linux version 5.0 (code-named 'Lenny') after 22 months of constant development. Debian GNU/Linux is a free operating system which supports a total of twelve processor architectures and includes the KDE, GNOME, Xfce, and LXDE desktop environments. Anne Nicolas has announced the availability of the beta release of Mandriva Linux 2009.1: "The beta release of Mandriva Linux 2009.1 (code name 'Margaux') is now available. This beta version provides some updates on major desktop components of the distribution, including KDE 4.2.0, GNOME 2.25.90, Xfce 4.6 RC1, X.Org server 1.5, OpenOffice.org 3.0.1, Qt 4.5.0 RC1. This beta version proposes step 1 of Speedboot, which should improve the boot time. It’s not enabled by default, to test it, enter the 'speedboot' keyword at boot time. This release is available as a DVD edition (32-bit or 64-bit) with a traditional installer, two CDs GNOME or KDE with a traditional installer. Mandriva Linux Assembly

Following the announcement in December 2008 of an international committee associating Mandriva with its Community, Mandriva, Europe’s leading Linux publisher, has completed the setting up of Mandriva Linux Assembly.

The roles, tasks and missions of this comity set out below with the goal of motivating future members wishing to take part in this venture.

The Mandriva Linux community draws together a wide range of participants:

• distribution users who may be actively promoting Open Source and Mandriva Linux possibly within the framework of associations,
  
• development version testers whose aim is to unveil bugs and submit suggestions for improvements,
  
• packagers and developers actively involved in development,
• translators of tools and documents whether online or not,
  
• the Mandriva team of developers, webmasters, project leaders.
  

This host of participants forms the strength of Mandriva Linux. And to sustain and to harness these talents and industry it was clear we needed to give them a clear structure to work within.

Mandriva proposes a monthly newsletter delivered through assembly-announce@mandrivalinux.org. We shall raise points being currently worked upon, the products roadmap, research programmes, global strategy, OEM and enterprise activities. This mailing list can be read by all and will be complemented by mandriva-discussion@mandrivalinux.org which will allow Mandriva Linux Assembly members to submit opinions or ask for further information on the points raised.

Fedora 11: Leonidas

Σε ένα μήνα περίπου (03/02) θα έχουμε την Alpha έκδοση της επερχόμενης Fedora, το όνομα της οποίας θα είναι “Leonidas”, όπως αποφασίστηκε μετά από ψηφοφορία.

Μετατρέψτε αρχεία video και DVDs με το Handbake.

Έψαχνα καιρό ένα πρόγραμμα για να μετατρέπω τα βίντεο από το κινητό και την φωτογραφική μου μηχανή σε διάφορα φορμά, και αναγκαζόμουν να bootάρω σε Windows για να χρησιμοποιήσω το πολύ καλό και δωρεάν Super.

Μέχρι που διάβασα στο τελευταίο total xaker (τ.Ιαν.2009), για το Handbrake το οποίο μετατρέπει όλα τα βίντεο και τα DVD σε οποιαδήποτε μορφή θέλουμε, ώστε να τα αναπαράγουμε σε οποιαδήποτε συσκευή/player!

Πρόκειται για ένα πρόγραμμα που διατίθεται κατω απο την άδεια GPL και πλέον είναι multiplatform (ξεκίνησε στο MacOS). Στην αρχή υπήρχε gui μόνο στο Mac, ενώ τώρα υπάρχει για Linux και για windows. Αρχικά μπορούσε να μετατρέψει μόνο τα dvd σε αρχεία avi, mp4 με
συμπίεση video κατά XviD, H.264 κλπ και ήχου κατά DTS,AC3,mp3.

Ωστόσο, η τελευταία έκδοση (0.9.3 αυτή τη στιγμή) μπορεί να έχει gui για ολα τα λειτουργικά, αλλά σταμάτησε και τον περιορισμό της πηγής εισόδου κι έτσι το Handbake δέχεται προς μετατροπή όλων των ειδών τα αρχεία video.

Βέβαια εδώ να τονίσουμε οτι το Handbake δεν μπορεί να διαβάσει κλειδωμένα DVD, αφού δεν ενσωματώνει την απαραίτητη βιβλιοθήκη στον κώδικά του. Φυσικά η λύση είναι πολύ απλή σε Linux. Δεν έχετε παρά να εγκαταστήσετε το libdvdcss2 (σε Ubuntu αρκεί ένα sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2). Αντίθετα σε windows αρκεί να έχετε εγκατεστημένο τον καλύτερο media player, vlc.

Τόσο απλά!

Δημοσκόπηση Office Suites

15 ημέρες απομένουν μέχρι τη λήξη της δημοσκόπησης για την αγαπημένη σας "σουίτα εφαρμογών γραφείου". Εσείς ποιά προτιμάτε για την πραγματοποίηση των εργασιών σας;

Στο δεξί μέρος του ιστολογίου θα δείτε το σχετικό πλαίσιο για να ψηφίσετε.

Εγκατάσταση Mathematica σε περιβάλλον Linux

Εγκατάσταση Wolfram Mathematica 7.0

Η εγκατάσταση γίνεται αποκλειστικά στο terminal.

Αρχικά πηγαίνουμε στο directory που είναι το cdrom μας με το δισκάκι του προγράμματος:
cd /media/cdrom0/Unix/Installer

και εκτελούμε τον installer (σαν root):
sudo ./MathInstaller
Στο τερματικό μας βλέπουμε τα παρακάτω μηνύματα:

Enter the installation directory, or press ENTER to select
/usr/local/Wolfram/Mathematica/7.0

πατάμε Enter

Enter the installation directory, or press ENTER to select /usr/local/Wolfram/Mathematica/7.0

Enter και ξεκινά η εγκατάσταση .

Έπειτα μας εμφανίζεται το παρακάτω μήνυμα :

Type the directory path in which the Wolfram Mathematica script(s) will be
created, or press ENTER to select /usr/local/bin:

πατάμε Enter .
...και μας ζητά πληροφορίες για το πως θα χρησιμοποιήσουμε το πρόγραμμα. Επιλέγουμε Single Machine.

Στη συνέχεια δίνουμε διαδοχικά το όνομα μας και το όνομα της εταιρείας μας και έπειτα το Licence ID και το password του προγράμματος.

Αυτό ήταν :-)
Τώρα δεν έχουμε παρά να ανοίξουμε ένα τερματικό και να δώσουμε mathematica, για να τρέξουμε το πρόγραμμα.

Σε Ubuntu 8.10 (που χρησιμοποίησα) έγινε και η απαραίτητη εγγραφη στα μενου του Gnome, κάτι που στις προηγούμενες εκδόσεις δε συνέβαινε. Έτσι πολύ απλά (με add this launcher to desktop) μπορείτε να προσθέσετε μία συντόμευση στην επιφάνεια εργασίας.
Αν όμως χρησιμοποιείτε άλλη διανομή ή δεν βρίσκεται το Mathematica στα μενού, τότε δημιουργήστε εσείς μία συντόμευση.
Σε Gnome: Δεξί κλικ στην επιφάνεια εργασίας και επιλέξτε Create Launcher. Τότε ο launcher φροντίστε να είναι κάπως έτσι
